Pokhara is Nepal's most relaxed and scenic city — a lakeside escape beneath the Annapurna massif that doubles as the country's adventure capital. Whether you are recovering from a trek, launching one, or simply want a few easy days surrounded by mountains and water, Pokhara delivers. Here are the best things to do, from the famous Sarangkot sunrise to paragliding over Phewa Lake.
Boat on Phewa Lake
The heart of Pokhara is Phewa Lake, where brightly painted wooden boats drift beneath the reflection of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and the Annapurnas. Row or paddle out to the Tal Barahi temple on its little island, or simply relax by the water along the Lakeside (Baidam) strip — the city's hub of cafes, restaurants and gear shops.
Watch Sunrise from Sarangkot
A short pre-dawn drive up to Sarangkot rewards you with Pokhara's signature view: the sun rising over a wall of Himalayan giants, lighting up Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and the perfect pyramid of Machhapuchhre. It is also the launch point for the city's world-class paragliding.
Go Paragliding & Adventure Sports
Pokhara is one of the best places on earth for commercial tandem paragliding — you launch from Sarangkot and soar above the lake with the mountains as a backdrop. Thrill-seekers can also try zip-lining (one of the steepest in the world), ultralight flights, microlight tours and white-water rafting on nearby rivers.
Peace Pagoda, Falls & Caves
- •World Peace Pagoda: a gleaming white Buddhist stupa on a ridge above the lake, with superb views — reachable by boat-and-hike or short drive.
- •Davis Falls (Devi's Fall): a dramatic waterfall that vanishes into an underground tunnel.
- •Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave: a large sacred cave directly across from Davis Falls.
- •International Mountain Museum: tells the story of Himalayan mountaineering and cultures.
- •Begnas Lake: a quieter, greener lake on the edge of town for a peaceful half-day.
Gateway to the Annapurnas
Pokhara is the launch point for Nepal's most popular treks, including the Annapurna Base Camp and Annapurna Circuit routes and the short Poon Hill trek. Permits, gear and guides are all easy to arrange in Lakeside, making the city the natural place to start or finish a Himalayan adventure.
Best time to visit: October-November and March-April for the clearest mountain views. Two to three days is enough for the highlights, or longer if you are pairing it with a trek.
